Descripción del curso
This workshop challenges the conventional view of Linguistic Validation in Clinical Outcome Assessments (COAs) as a procedural “checkbox” exercise and reframes it as a research-driven, culturally intelligent practice. Drawing on principles of cultural equivalency, inclusive language, and patient voice research, the session explores the limits of traditional validation approaches and highlights the risks of assuming that linguistic accuracy alone ensures conceptual and experiential alignment across populations. Participants will examine how cultural coating, cultural stripping, taboos, social norms, and worldview differences shape how patients interpret, respond to, and even engage with COAs. The workshop integrates practical guidance on cultural and linguistic adaptation—such as handling idioms, sensitive topics, and local behaviours—with a deeper exploration of how cognitive debriefing can move beyond comprehension checks to uncover meaningful patient insights. By combining methodological critique with applied exercises, the session positions translators and researchers as active cultural mediators and co-creators of patient voice, rather than passive implementers of predefined instruments. Participants will also explore the role of diversity and intersectionality in shaping valid and inclusive patient input. Ultimately, the workshop equips attendees with tools to design and evaluate COAs that are not only linguistically sound, but culturally relevant, inclusive, and reflective of real-world patient experience.
Ponentes
Nur Ferrante is a health communication strategist, linguistic validation specialist, and Founder & Director of Art of Diversity, where she integrates over 20 years of experience across language, culture, science, and the humanities. Her work focuses on linguistic validation, cultural adaptation of clinical outcome assessments (COAs), and patient-centred research, ensuring that patient-reported outcomes are not only technically accurate, but culturally meaningful and humanly resonant. As a mentor and teacher within Art of Diversity, she guides professionals and researchers in developing ethically grounded, culturally conscious approaches to patient voice and cross-cultural research. She is also the founder of Art of Diversity – Healing Words (Consultancy, School, Press and Research), co-host of the Patient Voice & Linguistic Validation Café podcast and Director of Business Development & Research Horizons at Gibson Research Consultancy (GRC) Ltd, contributing to global research initiatives that advance clarity, usability, and inclusion in healthcare communication. Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) informs her deep commitment to inclusive research and empathetic language. Across all her roles, her mission remains clear: to bridge science and soul, and to elevate patient voice as a force for transformative change.
Mark Gibson is the owner and CEO of Gibson Research Consultancy (GRC Health) Ltd. Based in Leeds, United Kingdom. GRC Health is a boutique company with a broad reach: we have staff across four continents, conduct Patient Voice-related projects in over 200 countries and partner with over 23000 professional research and health professionals around the world. His interest in the Patient Voice spans three decades and he has seen a number of manifestations of this. He became immersed in Patient Voice research (it was simply called ‘research’ then) upon embarking on an academic career and specialised early on in hard-to-reach and marginalised communities. He is also co-director at Art of Diversity, and co-host of the Patient Voice & Linguistic Validation Café podcast, a platform for community learning and discussion.
